“The success of yoga does not lie in the ability to perform postures but in how it positively changes the way we live our life and our relationships.”
Yoga in the West has become increasingly popular, growing exponentially since it was first introduced here in the 60s. Paradoxically now, whilst the rest of the world is striving to parallel the fast-paced lifestyle of the West, Western culture appears keen to adopt more tranquil Eastern practices such as yoga. Approximately 14.9 million Americans and half a million Britons are estimated to incorporate some form of this practice into their lives.
Yoga, according to the yoga sutras and other material written on this ancient practice, is to support a student in recognising their unrealised potential. For many, yoga is a sacred practise, for others a physical practise consisting of a series of postures that can release tension or burn weight. Some people start with a purely physical motivation and then find themselves on a journey of self-discovery and the areas of yoga that “support the quieting of the mind”.
Whatever it is, ultimately it is up to the individual to decide, but overall yoga offers us a healing, strengthening, calming, and empowering practice with something for everybody, regardless of their age, gender, race, size, shape, background and fitness level.
As with all Gently be activities, we are passionate about our offerings being accessible and manageable for anyone who wants to try and introduce change into their life gently and slowly, whether it’s mindfulness/meditation, making healthier eating choices or yoga. The Yoga Discovery Course (5 weeks, 1¼ hours per session) provides a starting place for those absolutely new to yoga, who might be nervous of joining a general mixed ability class, or are concerned with fitness, body shape etc, or for those who may have a little beginner experience but wish to revisit the basics.
We will cover some of the ancient foundations of yoga, understand the use of breath and we’ll learn the fundamental poses step by step, taking it nice and slow exploring one pose at a time, with attention to posture and correct alignment. Each session will end with a rejuvenating relaxation. The goal of the course is to give you the confidence at the end of 5 weeks to join in with other classes and/or start your own daily practise at home, continuing to find your personal journey with yoga.
