Hypnobirthing has become more and more popular with expectant mothers in recent years for positive reasons. Severe pain has come to be expected alongside labour, but the experience of pain can very often be a fear response that can be avoided if the right techniques are learnt before giving birth. Many maternity hospitals now recommend hypnobirthing as one of the techniques women can use to help them through their pregnancy and labour, providing an important opportunity for them to feel in control of their birth.
Hypnobirthing teaches women and their birth partners approaches and techniques which help to make birth relaxed and harmonious. These techniques include different types of breathing to calm the body, and each other, at key stages; self-hypnosis to help keep relaxed even during the final stages of labour, and ways to let go of fears and anxieties around childbirth.
To add to the sense of control for both parents, hypnobirthing courses also include easy-to-understand information about what happens to a woman’s body during each stage of labour and tips on how to create the ideal environment for giving birth naturally, whether that is at home or in hospital.
In the words of a recent client, ‘I’m really looking forward to giving birth now, instead of dreading it’.
Occasionally, of course, there is a condition or development during labour which requires intervention of some kind in the best interests of mother and baby. On these occasions preparation through hypnobirthing techniques helps all those involved stay calm and relaxed, so that even more managed births feel more natural and enjoyable.
A course consists of four 2.5 hour sessions with Jackie Bland, hypnobirthing practitioner (title/letters after name?), plus 6 months access to a range of invaluable on-line support materials.
